Palmerston North is a major rail centre on the main trunk line. State Highway 1 passes through the region, and there are excellent roading connections north, south, east and west. Palmerston North Airport has domestic services to all of major cities as well as numerous provincial centres. It also has the record for being open the most days of any New Zealand airport.

Cycling

Palmerston North city has a growing number of designated cycle lanes and cycling tracks. The cycle lanes provide a network for cyclists to get around the greater city, and to and from the CBD. The council has made a significant investment in developing the cycle lane network and consider cyclist safety to be a highly important issue.

Buses

There is a small urban bus service – five town buses and one campus bus leave the terminal in Main Street East (in front of the Palmerston North Courthouse) at least every half hour. It is run in conjunction between Horizons Regional Council and Masterton-based bus company Tranzit.

Taxis

Taxis are an easy way to get around the city and provide an alternative to Palmerston North's smaller and less comprehensive bus network. Choose from any of the taxi ranks from around 'The Square'.

Trains

There are only two passenger trains: the Monday-Friday Capital Connection to and from Wellington, and the Overlander to Auckland and Wellington.
