Dunedin is the gateway to Otago and the lower South Island and is fairly compact, making it easy to get around. Road

State Highway 1 runs north to south-west through the centre of Dunedin, linking to Invercargill in the south and Timaru and Christchurch to the north. The Southern Scenic Route is a tourist highway connecting Dunedin to Te Anau via The Catlins, Invercargill and Fiordland.

Buses

Buses are the main public transport option in Dunedin and there are 3 main bus companies operating services. There are 18 weekday routes and 12 weekend/public holiday routes.

Taxis

There are a number of taxi companies operating in Dunedin and providing links with the Inernational Airport. The main taxi operators are:

Trains

There are no trains servicing the Dunedin area for public transport; however it is possible to take a scenic train ride from Dunedin Train Station through the spectacular Taieri Gorge.

Air

Dunedin International Airport is located 22km west of central Dunedin and takes about 20 minutes by car. It is the South Island's third-busiest airport after Christchurch and Queenstown and the majority of flights are domestic, servicing Auckland, Christchurch, Wellington, Rotorua and Palmerston North. International flights are available to Brisbane and seasonally to Sydney and Melbourne.
