Read about 'Student Summer Moving Tips' on USAVE, the place for all things car rental.Summer is often a time of change for University and College age students, as they either leave home for the first time or change their living arrangements. Sometimes the move is within the same neighbourhood, and sometimes it can be to a whole different city. Regardless, there are some things you can do to make it easier for yourself.
1. Schedule end/start lease dates as close as possible. This can be tricky to do, as most leases in New Zealand are a solid year. However it’s worth talking to your landlord to see if they can be flexible at all, but if not it’s always preferable to have overlap rather than a stretch of time with nowhere to stay.
2. Book your hire truck or furniture trailer rental well in advance. It’s a busy time of year, with everyone needing the same services in order to move. Book ahead to ensure you get the vehicle or trailer you require. Many students will not have had much experience driving with a trailer, so ensure there’s someone on hand who will be able to back it and manoeuvre it without causing damage.
3. Ditch some stuff for the new year. For students moving out for the first time, it can be tempting to take absolutely everything that they’ve had at home for years. However it’s a good point in life to cut down and decide what’s actually essential, and to leave the rest at home if it’s possible. It makes it easier to move, and also to set up once you get there.
For students, moving is an exciting but also stressful time – on top of other things to organise such as courses, books, clubs and fees, it’s just one more thing to worry about. However there are things you can do to make it easier, including planning and looking up term dates in advance.
