Pick up a rental van from one of our handy Auckland depots and make your way out to one of the following fantastic destinations.
Auckland Road Trip Destinations
Duder Regional Park is a large farm park beside the sea, offering spectacular views of the Hauraki Gulf. There are a number of gentle and more strenuous walks you can do to fully explore the area, including the foundations of an old Maori settlement. Access is via the Southern Motorway, and in addition to the farmland you’ll find pockets of native bush including kauri trees and rare bird species.
Great Barrier Island is another fantastic destination that many Auckland residents will know about but have never been to. This is because it’s a bit of a longer journey through narrow, winding roads but those who have been there will assure you that the effort is well worth it. The reward is vast, untouched native forests, natural hot springs, white sandy beaches and some of the best surfing spots in New Zealand.
For a different experience, Hobsonville Point is an historical airbase with many of the original buildings still intact. An hour-long walk leads you around the main features, including a row of houses occupied by officers, barracks and a hangar. All the structures date between 1925-1937, and are a great portrayal of New Zealand architecture of that time period. There is also a Farmers’ Market every weekend selling fresh local produce plus waterfront bars and cafes. Situated roughly halfway between Albany and Westgate on State Highway 18, it takes about 20 minutes to drive here from the CBD.
A closer drive at just 45 minutes from the Auckland CBD, Matakana is a popular destination for Aucklanders looking to escape the city. Not just known for its beautiful natural environment with rivers, forests and beaches, but also its local culture and shops. A Farmers’ Market, cafes and wine stores are all major attractions and it’s perfect for a family day out. On the way, Puhoi is well worth a stop as it contains historic colonial buildings, a famous pub and a cheese factory.
Auckland rental van road trips are a great way to enjoy the natural environments surrounding the city, providing the opportunity to escape and relax with friends and family. USAVE offer a range of spacious and affordable van and minibus rental vehicles ranging from 8 seater people carriers to luxury 12 seater coaches.
