Although it’s already been more than two years since the Canterbury earthquake that struck in 2011 and caused so much damage to both property and lives, many are still in the process of having their homes repaired.  Though this is often organised by the insurance companies involved, there are cases where people feel more comfortable opting out and taking matters into their own hands. To do this you need to be willing to do everything yourself, and this includes organising new accommodation and just as importantly, transporting your belongings into storage while you’re there using a Christchurch rental truck. This can be a daunting process as it’s so much more lengthy than just a standard move between homes. However there are a number of things you can do to make the process easier on yourself.

  1. Sort out the items you’ll need during your stay. While much of the temporary accommodation available around Christchurch comes already furnished, you may want to bring some of your own furniture and other creature comforts. Before your moving day, get these totally separated out and ready to go to the new place – or if you have overlap, get them moved there beforehand.
  2. Book your rental truck ahead of time. It’s important to get a vehicle that will be big enough to accommodate all your items in one trip. In addition to that provided by the removal company, hiring a Christchurch rental truck ensures you collect up any loose ends in one sweep without any tricky leftovers.
  3. Find storage close by if possible. The closer the storage, the less time it will take, and the less expensive it will be.  Look into options such as shipping containers and garages as well as traditional storage lockers, which are practical but can be expensive.
  4. Sell and get rid of any junk or unnecessary items. The less you take with you, the easier the process will be. Therefore a few weeks before your scheduled repair date is a good time to start listing items for sale.
  5. Label everything yourself. Movers will list where the items came from, but not what the items are. Save yourself some time and effort by thoroughly labelling everything – putting things into storage for so long means you’ll likely forget which boxes are carrying what just from sight.

Moving can be a stressful process, and vacating your house for repairs involves two instances of moving all your possessions within a short space of time.
