New Zealand Truck Rental

Moving Checklist

If you’re moving house, make sure you don’t overlook some of the important tasks in the excitement of your move. This simple checklist from our New Zealand truck rental specialists should help.

  • Reserve your rental vehicles: book your truck rental as far in advance as possible to ensure availability. If you have a large family, also consider hiring a minibus or minivan to transport you to your new home instead of making several trips.
  • Book accommodation: if you’re staying overnight along the way, reserve your accommodation well in advance.
  • Change your address: send change-of-address cards the week before you move.
  • Notify service and utility companies: inform your current suppliers such as newspaper delivery, doctor, dentist, vet, phone, TV, rates, water and power to discontinue services. Find out whether there is a cancellation fee and give plenty of notice to avoid paying extra.
  • Find new suppliers: compare local suppliers for your new home and sign up. Consider combining phone and TV suppliers etc to make savings. Find a new dentist and vet if you’re relocating to a new area.
  • Cancel membership fees: some organizations offer partial refunds so ask about their policies and make sure you give plenty of notice to avoid extra charges.
  • Prepare your new home: contact painters, carpenters, plumbers, roofers etc. and arrange any repairs or refurbishment so your home is ready when you arrive. Remember to change the locks on all the doors in your new home.
  • Measure for access: measure doorways, hallways, elevators and stairwells in your new home to make sure you have enough clearance.
  • Gather important records: collect important family documents such as medical, dental, veterinary and school records; legal and financial documents; birth certificates, passports and insurance documents etc and keep them safe.
  • Return library books and films: make sure all library books, DVDs and games are returned to the library and your local video store.
  • Register with a new doctor: avoid paying casual patient fees by registering with a new doctor and transfer any existing repeat prescriptions. It can take a while for your records to be transferred to your new doctor, so ask your old doctor for a list of any medications you’ll need and get an extra month’s supply of any important mediation.
